J-: When we talked of my writing your artist statement you told me - opens small notebook and reads – ‘in an eagerness to make things, an anxiety develops at the thought of not being able to reveal the truth, so I end up in this obsession of adding things, moving things, removing things - constant changes - every time I think a device is finished I discover something that must be in it or must be removed’ – looks up - you called it ‘paradoxical dysfunction’.

R-: OCD fung shui - unfolds scrap of paper, reads, then hands to her - ‘sincerity through failure, to a genuine, obsessional desire to make something, eventually leading to misconstrued notions of value or usefulness.‘1 Not me.

J-: Sounds a lot like you. You also said you wanted to present your artwork with a 3-dimensional instrument or device. What mediums will you be using?

R-: Say you have a box that delivered something to you, it served its purpose and is no longer of use, however, it is new, well made, and has a charming shape.

J-: A box?

R-: Is where I got the - slide projector, stereoscope, lap top combo - idea. And I also wanted it to be transient, nomadic, and comprised mostly of scraps. I call it Basura Art. I came up w/ that at a Big Thought Art Camp a few summers ago. The kids were throwing away way too much paper and I took some stuff from the trash - basura - and made a bunny sculpture. I was trying to teach them conservation and recycling.

J-: And the simulacra for your art work?

R-: Glossy photos mounted on cork, foam, cardboard, or held by magnets. Then they became a medium, or 1 of many.

J-: Like what?

R-: Pvc pipe, silk ties, jute, wire fencing - which conjured up molasses, then I added a medicine cabinet, and a plastic cookie tray from the Systems' 2008 opening reception. There was a lot more, they just didn’t make the final cuts.

J-: Looking around the studio - Gambiologia, shapeshifting, refunctioning, crosstraining - just as with the paintings on redwood - looks at her notebook - starting back in 2002. Is that what's happening here?

R-: What I didn't know was that the devices being made to present the art, would become the art. Like - points to - standing at the gate.

J-: It’s a miniature retrospective, a heterotopia of past exhibitions?

R-: Stacked like a 4 layer cake that droops into 1. You can see pretty much everything except for the books in baggage. The stack could be dismantled some if you want to open it. There’s 10 books inside.

J-: This obsession with grouping, bundling, and changing, relates directly to your performances - reads from notebook - ‘essentially a ritual used to create an environment’ – as you once described them. Some say it is more like a display of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Does this bother you?

R-: No.

J-: The soundtracks, just like your habitual ritual movements, are melting pots. Is there any culture you won’t steal from?

R-: Frowns - appropriate. I’m sure there’s some.

J-: Watching video of his last performance - I notice tossing the dice, coins, and other noisy objects, is similar to i-ching. Are you conscious of that?

R-: My unconscious drives the bus, but yes, in fact I was just reading more about it and ran across this by Jung - unfolds another paper scrap, reads, and hands to her - ‘Theoretical considerations of cause and effect often look pale and dusty in comparison to the practical results of chance.’2 pale and dusty would be a good title for the installation.

J-: Looks at yantra on floor - ‘pale and dusty’, an elegant ying/yang rectangle.

R-: Speaks rapidly - Or boson/fermion, graviton/gravitino, supersymmetry, SUSY, or MSSM, minimal supersymmetric standard model.3

J-: Gregging in her notebook - what was that after Susie?

R-: Stands - there must be a title in there somewhere - smacking his right fist into his left palm - but I'm looking for an actual truth - emphatically4 - so it has to be - accentuating loudly - ‘you cannot deny, that rabbitts multiple’.5

J-: Looking up from her notebook - let’s talk about your 1st love. Painting.

R-: Rips mic off shirt collar and storms off.

J-: Looking at her camera guy - what the bloody hell? A*****e stormed off.6

1-: The quote is from a book on conceptual artists and could be describing his ancestors. Robert Earnest Moore. That’s his full name. 1 grandfather’s 1st name and the other’s middle and last. Traumas, failures, and demons, yet still an Earnestness;

2-: 5th sentence of 5th paragraph of the forward written by a German, translated by a Scotsman, for a book on the arcane Chinese obsession, i-ching. 8 letters in front of, 8 letters in back, centering - pale and dusty;

3-: As with string therapy in 2005, quantum mechanics is gentle on his mind;

4-: 6 words, 3 on each side, w/5 accent points on each side;

5-: He spells rabbit w/2 t's, it's 1 of his monikers.7;

6-: A week later, his abandoned pickup was found at the City of Rocks in Luna County New Mexico.8 The only people to hear from him is The Creative Arts Center in East Dallas where he teaches Abstract Painting. He canceled his classes;

7-: Moniker is 1850’s London slang for hobo;

8-: The locals say that before a solstice you can see his ghostly figure running from the Rocks north towards Cook’s Peak.

use the zoom feature to see details;

the tape is inserted into the tape player, push the play button, and insert the tape player into slot at bottom of viewer, the sound comes out the green funnel and red valve will control volume. the tape is me describing the work as you crank (although i may record myself reading infinite jest);

special luxury package shirt off my back gives the viewer a really sentient experience, especially having the hood over your head to shut out the outside and use the soft tent light instead, very relaxing;

all to be presented in a nomadic/transient manner,
as the entire thing is rolled up inside rabbitt,
the ritualist will carry it all into the room,
make some noise is in place already,

When the chance to perform on the Chinese New Year Eve, i put immersion on the shelf and created a nomadic, transient, and silent ritual. ash is part of the performance in a box series and appropriate for Solstice and New Year Celebrations. Everything an artist will need to perform this ritual is included.

Amy Sillman
layers paint over layers of paint the way Richard Diebenkorn did. Sometimes she loads up her brush like Park, Bischoff or other Bay Area School types. She shmears wet paint across a canvas like Gerhard Richter. Sometimes she dabs it on almost tentatively, as Guston did in his great Turneresque abstractions.
Then there are the compositions themselves. Her diagonals reject a painter’s tendency to grid, the same way Diebenkorn’s did circa Ocean Park.

i teach an abstract painting class on wednesday nights

Artists tend to have an innate individual way to paint and this class truly does.
Some slather the paint while others coax it as others contemplate...brushes, knives, forks, fingers - are being used - spatulas, scanning the room i see awesome paintings made and then swiped away, replaced by another - other paintings
slowly being created, loving how color enhances another, feeling frustrated when brushes seem to work against you, but then you start liking the effect...and this class all use color well.

(do not ask the lady "how's the weather up there?" or "you play basketball?" she's a bit touchy about her height)

Abstract Expressionists - the New York School - the abstract opposites?
the abstract extremes?
Jackson Pollock (center of photo) the center of the storm, the American hero that wrestled the art world away from the Europeans, (of course many in this photo are displaced Europeans) and of course, Pollock's legendary self destructiveness seems to cement his status. (basquiat?) A rough cowboy from the American West who wanted to show-up these euro snobs, Pollock has left the surface - flinging paint above a canvas on the floor, brushstrokes made in space - snot-slinging drunk, to boot. Using 1,000s of wavy lines, he's the initial string theorist - but where did this originate? I think being trapped in the city and owning no social skills, he lashed out with aggression, both in the studio and out... (speaking of European, Pollock once whizzed in his guest filled living room's fireplace). Where as - seated just below him - Barnett Newman needed only 1, 2, or 3 straight lines running vertical on flat planes of color. Mark Rothko, seated in the right fore-ground, also painted planes of color - hovering rectangles - seemingly exploring the infinite... painting the unknown or unseen - the unexplainable - that's what they are doing. Well maybe not william de kooning, back row, left...he didn't know what he was painting he just painted, flaying away at the canvas, not knowing when to stop, his wife, elaine would, at some point, replace the canvas he's working on with a blank 1, he never even noticed, he just continued to paint...that's my theory.
Some in this photo (i can't recall them all, although there is 1 whose name is similar to mine, very well known but not that great, and i don't see franz kline) would gather at the Cedar's Tavern in Greenwich Village to drink and argue...aggressive behavior = aggressive art. The Americans Kline and Pollock probably used the European Rothko as a punching bag. The style was kinda put in the grave with Pollock, but Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns carried their torch, while Andy Warhol reacted in a different way.

acrylic : drys faster; cleanup w/water; mix w/water or use mediums. *
oil : drys slower; cleanup w/turpentine, mineral spirits, or turpenoid; mix w/turpentine, linseed oil, or turpenoid.

color

i use mostly primary colors; below is a basic list; you don't need them all, but nice to have; boxed sets are sometimes a good way to go.
warm primarys :
cadmium red;
cadmium yellow - combine with red for orange;
cerulean blue - combine with yellow for a warm green;
cool primarys :
alizarin crimson;
lemon yellow - combine with blue for a cool green;
ultramarine blue - combine with crimson for purple;
essential :
white and black;
optional :
'earth tones' yellow ochre, raw sienna, burnt umber.

brushes

synthetic for acrylic and oil; natural bristle for oil.

flat - broad or thin lines, ideal for small, precise brushmarks;
round - forms sharp point for fine lines, details;
filbert or bright - flat brush that rounds a bit is good for thin, broad, or tapering lines;
expensive brushes last longer, if taken care of;
mine wear down fast so I often use cheap ones;
some stores have them in inexpensive packs.

paint on

stretched canvas can be bought in inexpensive packs, paper, wood veneer, masonite.
mix paint on
paper palette pads, taped down wax paper, plastic plates for acrylic, metal trays for acrylic and oil.
other stuff
palette knives for mixing and painting; rags and paper towels; painting shirt, smock, or apron; spray bottle for keeping acrylic paint wet.

i painted this 7 years ago...it has become a reality
i'm discovering why my farm cousins used to have looks
of fear on their faces when speaking of yellowjackets;
these muthas are no joke !
growing up in new mexico we didn't have these evil things...
we had gila monsters (cross between lizard, bull frog, and
rattlesnake) which (on a late nite talk show last week)
someone brought out & i identified it before he got the whole thing
out of the sack...(instant recognition of poisonous things is imperative
when your favorite hiking area is "rattlesnake state park")
(no shit, that's the title they gave it)(was it to lure or ward off tourists?)...
...so i would visit cousins in texas...we walked everywhere barefoot...
from pavement to sticker (goatheads) infested fields,
would grab a horse by its mane, jump on & ride bareback til
we were flung off, swim in water tanks that had to bee shared
with turtles and snakes (i almost ran on water 1 time)...
when we played football 1 cousin could tackle so hard i'd see stars...
no fears...but if yellowjackets were ever seen or mentioned
looks of terror swept their faces...

i don't seem to ever have problems with bees or wasps so i was
unprepared for these muthas...(exhibit a) email sent in the beginning
...well they got in a couple of good shots but i feel the tide turning... no poisons though, nope, this'll bee an eco-friendly ass whuppin'... yellowjackets ain't bees and they're going down

1 hit on the left inside elbow at night with a light shinning through the window
to illuminate where i was digging a fence post hole and they came out buzzin
n swarming n dive bombing n i thought it was horse flies till i got hit n
ran inside n looking thru window see 10 or soo things that look like a
cross between a bee & a wasp but super aggressive...
i turned off the light & put baking soda on the hit...it hurt like crazy...
a few days later i was again trying to dig the fence post hole & from out of
nowhere i get hit again...inside right elbow...these guys are pros...
i load up a couple of squirt bottles with dish soap & looking like a cowboy
with twin six shooters (that i played as a kid)(kid cheyenne i think)...
i go hunting the yellowjackets...
for which i am now determined that is what they must bee...
insert cousin stories here...
i try hitting them with the spray bottle but it's futile...they move too
quick and are too aggressive...this is where the innocent take a hit...
i go round the house taking out all wasps...'cause i don't know who's
working for whom...3 different types of wasps go down...
with barely a fight...a whimper actually...
still the gangsters haven't been located...i return to where they always
attack & discover them coming from a hole...an old tree trunk...
juniper - no doubt...i pour the soapy water down it & run inside...
to google...n this is it...
underground condos full of aggressive attacking flying day ruin-ers...so i'm trying to install a gate & fence (privacy & protection)
on top of their village & they ain't having none of that...
but wait, these would bee the ultimate guard dog...
an intruder steps up to the gate or fence & are immediately
& relentlessly attacked by things they can't see much less...
punch, stab, or shoot...but nope, that will not work
we live here, too...
i begin pouring boric acid over their entrance...
instantly a guard dog has hit my right middle finger & begins
pumping poison...i keep pouring until i can't take it anymore
throw down the bottle & run inside...i bury my finger in the box
of baking soda while chanting my 10 and 12 letter word mantra...

i notice the mosquitoes (upon seeing the dead wasps and emptied nests)
are holding a parade in my honor...20 or so wait by the window (paparazzi like)
& when i emerge they flock to me flying around (pearl harbor like)...but they are
soo appreciative they don't even bite me...one tried & the crowd stomped him...
however my actions did little to slow these relentless thugs...my next move ?
pour cement down the hole...seal'em in, but what about the one's not in there
& what if they have/or make another exit...i let them & the fence building bee
(for a few days)(cluck?)...then sunday our a/c compressor quit & i went out
to take a look...no buzzin no attacks but i couldn't find the a/c problem...
luckily the weather was pleasant...but more electrical problems arrived
(combo of old wiring and wet weather i guess) & i was going around
the house removing outdoor fixtures & running new electrical
wires & plugs...treading litely (but not lite enuff) it happened...
hearin' nothing n seeing a blur i've been hit (middle of my back)
(thru my shirt) i haul it inside to try putting ice on it & realize i'm
holding my cheek (these guys are pros) not only did they get me
where i can't reach they got me where i can't miss seeing it...
combo of ice n probably building up some immunities these stings
don't seem to bee soo bad...but you can't overlook the 1 on the cheek...

ok, now every outdoor movement every buzzing has me flinching...
& like the orange wasp that stung my finger earlier in the spring...
(i was planting & thought i had cut my finger on some glass)...
(almost the same spot under the tree & same spot on the
finger i broke last year)...could that have been a queen...
the sting hurt soo much...i ran to the baking soda...
the pain was more intense but went away faster...
at the time (seeing an orange flash)(in the dirt)...
i thought...el diablo...
now these things underground...they are indeed...el diablo...
which means exorcism...

my sketch for the installation that is in the book Beets

an empty bank building on wall street...sci fi futuristic, unconventional space that we took as a special challenge... most of the artists were in town for the install...i built the leaning wall for pedro, duplicating his last exhibit...donna, mariana, and jason had sewing machines and glue guns going 24/7... part of my performance is finishing the installation, the aluminum screen wall and pipes was working, but it all came together when workers brought in heavy dance floor sections and i

was able to use 3 of the sections, i now had a
circular flow from floor to ceiling and the plan is to use my extended sound track and drag out the performance so mariana can start her speed clothes changing while i move in a slow juxtaposition across the room...randall and i were sleeping on the roof of jack the pelican gallery in williamsburg, but when the floors showed up i decided to sleep on top of my art on the wood floors...as the city quietened the subway turn underneath us passing through our installations...the performances were the best ever...randall shot the video and niloo jalilvand edited and made it awesome.

you may have stuff around the house...house paint, brushes, spatulas, scrapers, sponges...scrap wood, heavy cardboard (collage w/newspaper), old paintings - you may not need to buy a lot of supplies, but read the list, please:

paint palette big enough to mix – paper pads, plastic or metal tray...

palette knife 1 or more...rags, paper towels, painting clothes, apron, smock...spray bottles

paint on stretched or canvas boards - large or small - your preference - packs of 2 or 3 often available; unstrechted canvas (primed or not), cotton duck from the fabric store; heavy drawing, watercolor, or printing paper; plywood, veneer, mdf, hardwood panels...

The prevalence of those earlier snowman-gone-wild days is now a distant memory as our society insists children’s beloved holiday icons adopt a more proper decorum.

Property damage. A man from the 12000 block of Oak Park Boulevard NE. called police because someone knocked the head off of the snowman he made this year. He said this happens every year. The police report noted the snowman was made of snow.
